Background
The story
James Hunt's helmet carried his name in bold letters with blue, yellow and red stripes on a black background, the stripes matching the colours of his old school, Wellington College.
1976 was his first season with McLaren, in the M23. He won six Grands Prix in a fierce, controversial fight with Niki Lauda, who was badly injured at the Nürburgring. At the wet finale in Japan, Hunt survived a puncture to finish third and won the title by a single point.
He was the last British champion until Nigel Mansell in 1992.
