Background

The story

AMG was founded in 1967 by former Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher as a racing engine company, its name taken from their initials and Aufrecht's birthplace, Großaspach. In the early 1970s it went racing with the big 300 SEL 6.3 V8 saloon, nicknamed the 'Red Sow' or 'Red Pig', including the 1971 Spa 24 Hours.

The 300 SEL 6.3 itself was created when Mercedes engineer Erich Waxenberger put the 6.3-litre V8 from the 600 into the W109 saloon. This WERK83 model shows the AMG car with starting number 35, driven by Helmut Kelleners at the Südwestpokal at Hockenheim in 1971.
