Background

The story

Peugeot launched the 304 at the Paris Motor Show in September 1969 to fill the gap between its 204 and 404. It reused the 204's midsection to keep costs down and was known for its Pininfarina-styled exterior.

In March 1970 the four-seat coupé and the cabriolet replaced their 204 forerunners. In March 1972 they became the first 304s to get the S engine: the 1,288 cc all-alloy overhead-cam four-cylinder with a twin-choke carburettor, giving 75 hp, a 10 hp increase.

The 304 was a success for Peugeot. By the time the last estates left the line in 1980, 1,178,423 had been built, about 36 percent of them for export. It was replaced by the 305.
