Background

The story

The Volkswagen Type 1, known everywhere as the Beetle, was built from 1938 to 2003. Its 65-year run is the longest for any single generation of car, and with 21.5 million made at more than twenty locations, it is the best-selling car on a single platform in history.

Ferdinand Porsche's team developed it in the 1930s, but series production only began after the war, on 27 December 1945, at the plant in what had just been renamed Wolfsburg. Under Heinrich Nordhoff, output grew rapidly, and the millionth car was built on 6 August 1955.

By the early 1960s, when this car was built, the Wolfsburg plant employed more than 43,500 people. Volkswagen did not officially call the car the "Beetle" until 1968.
