Background
The story
The Renault 5 was formally launched on 28 January 1972, styled by Michel Boué, who designed it in his spare time. The first generation was built until the all-new Supercinq replaced it in 1984.
The GTL was launched in 1976 with the 1,289 cc engine from the R5 TS. It had TL-level equipment plus grey side protection strips, styled wheels, reversing lights and electric washers. From 1977 it also had opening rear quarter windows.
The 5 was France's best-selling car from 1972 to 1986. More than 5.5 million were made, making it France's most popular car. In the United States and Canada it was sold as Le Car.
