Background

The story

Alpina's roots go back to 1962, when Burkard Bovensiepen developed a Weber dual carburettor for the BMW 1500. In 1964 BMW gave cars fitted with it the full factory guarantee, and Bovensiepen founded the company in 1965. Based in Buchloe, Bavaria, Alpina is recognised by the German Ministry of Transport as a car manufacturer rather than a tuner.

The C1 was based on the E21 323i. Special Mahle pistons, a special exhaust and ignition system, dry-sump lubrication and a short-ratio five-speed gearbox lifted the C1 2.3 to 125 kW (168 hp) and 225 Nm. It reached 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and had a top speed of 213 km/h.

The E21 was the first BMW 3 Series, built from June 1975 to December 1983. There was no M3 of that generation; instead, several limited-edition models were built on the six-cylinder 323i, which arrived in 1978 as the range's fuel-injected flagship.
