Background

The story

In the mid-1960s BMW saw a market for a smaller, cheaper two-door version of its New Class saloon. Designers Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen shortened the wheelbase and rear deck, and the result was lighter, faster and better handling than the New Class.

The car debuted as the 1600-2 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966, the '-2' meaning two doors. In 1971 the name was simplified to 1602. Its 1.6-litre M10 engine produced 85 PS, and in 1968 Road & Track called it 'a great automobile for the price'.

The 02 Series led to the 2002 and was replaced by the E21 3 Series in 1975.
