Background

The story

The first BMW M3 was a homologation special for Group A and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, which required 5,000 road cars plus 500 evolution versions. To keep the racing car competitive as the rules changed year by year, BMW sold a series of limited evolution models, ending with the Sport Evolution of 1990.

Limited to 600 cars, the Sport Evolution had an enlarged 2,467 cc S14 four-cylinder producing 238 PS at 7,000 rpm, and a top speed of 250 km/h. Larger front bumper openings, an adjustable multi-position front splitter and rear wing, and brake cooling ducts in place of the front foglights set it apart from the standard car.
