Background
The story
The Mini was designed for BMC by Sir Alec Issigonis. Its transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout let about 80 per cent of the floorpan be used for passengers and luggage. Built from 1959 into 2000, an estimated 5.38 million were made, and the Cooper S won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967.
The Cooper name returned in 1990 and went into full production in late 1991. In 1997 the car gained a multi-point fuel-injected 1,275 cc engine and a front-mounted radiator, and the final Mark VII cars also had a full-width dashboard and a driver's airbag.
Production of the original Mini ended at Longbridge in October 2000, after 41 years, and the Mini name passed to BMW.
