Background · 1957
The Ferrari 801 was the last chapter of the Lancia D50, the V8 Grand Prix car Vittorio Jano designed for Lancia in 1954. When Lancia stepped back from racing, its cars passed to Ferrari, and Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1956 world title in one. For 1957 Ferrari reworked the design heavily as the 801, removing the side pannier fuel tanks. It still handled well, but it lacked straight-line speed against the Maserati 250F and the new Vanwalls.
Mike Hawthorn rejoined the Ferrari works team for 1957. At the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring on 4 August he started second on the grid, and after Fangio lost time at a slow pit stop, Hawthorn and teammate Peter Collins ran first and second. Fangio then chased them down, breaking the lap record again and again, and passed both of them on the penultimate lap. Hawthorn finished second, 3.6 seconds behind, in a race still remembered as one of the greatest drives in the sport. The win gave Fangio his fifth world title.
Ferrari did not win a championship Grand Prix in 1957, yet at the Nürburgring Hawthorn led until the closing laps of one of the sport's most famous races. A year later he was world champion with Ferrari, the first British driver to take the title. This replica of his number 8 car comes with a driver figure.
