Silverstone GP Safety Car

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series was revealed on 9 July 2020. Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the M178 LS2 with a flat-plane crankshaft, makes 537 kW (730 PS) and 800 Nm, and Mercedes-AMG claimed 0–100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h.

On 4 November 2020 Maro Engel lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a Black Series in 6:43.616, the fastest lap by a road-legal production car at the time. The aerodynamics were built for the track: Mercedes-AMG quoted more than 400 kg of downforce at 249 km/h.

That pace made it a natural Formula One safety car. Mercedes supplied the Black Series from 2022, sharing duties with Aston Martin's Vantage through 2025. Bernd Mayländer, at the wheel of the F1 safety car since 2000, led the field with it until it was replaced by the AMG GT 63 Pro during 2026.
