Background · 2001

The story

New rules for 2001 raised the front wing to cut downforce, and Rory Byrne's team under Ross Brawn answered with the F2001's drooping nose and spoon-shaped front wing. It was powered by Ferrari's 3.0-litre Tipo 050 V10 and went on to win ten Grands Prix across 2001 and early 2002.

At Monaco on 27 May 2001, Schumacher qualified second, but pole-sitter David Coulthard stalled before the start and had to begin from the back. Schumacher led from the start and only gave up first place during the pit stops, finishing ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello for a Ferrari one-two. Eddie Irvine, now with Jaguar, was third.

It was Schumacher's fifth Monaco win, equalling Graham Hill's record. He won nine races that season and clinched his fourth world title with four races still to run, while Ferrari took a third straight constructors' championship.
