Background

The story

A Formula One Ferrari that isn't red is a rare sight. Shortly before Christmas 1997, Michael Schumacher lapped Ferrari's Fiorano test track in an all-black car: the new F300 for 1998, painted black to hide its details from rivals. New rules that year made the cars narrower, from 2.00 to 1.80 metres, and replaced slicks with grooved tyres.

The F300 was designed by a team including Rory Byrne, with Ross Brawn as technical director, and used the 3-litre Tipo 047 V10. It proved competitive and reliable but was aerodynamically behind the McLaren MP4/13. Schumacher won six races and finished runner-up to Mika Häkkinen, 86 points to 100.
