Background

The story

The 1998 Belgian Grand Prix on 30 August was run entirely in heavy rain. A first-lap pile-up involving 13 drivers stopped the race for more than an hour, and at the restart championship leader Mika Häkkinen spun and was hit by Johnny Herbert's Sauber.

Michael Schumacher passed Damon Hill for the lead on lap eight and had built a lead of more than 30 seconds by lap 24 when he came up to lap David Coulthard. Told to let him by, Coulthard slowed but stayed on the racing line; blinded by the spray, Schumacher hit the back of the McLaren, tearing off his Ferrari's front-right wheel. He drove back to the pits on three wheels and retired, and Hill went on to give Jordan its first win.
