Background

The story

For the Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix in 2025, McLaren ran the MCL39 in a special livery inspired by the M7A, the car that first carried McLaren's papaya colour. Monaco that year also brought a new rule forcing every driver to make at least two pit stops.

Lando Norris took pole position and converted it into victory on 25 May 2025, ahead of Charles Leclerc's Ferrari and his teammate Oscar Piastri. It was his second win of the season and McLaren's first Monaco victory since 2008, and it cut Piastri's championship lead to three points.

Norris went on to win the 2025 drivers' title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and the MCL39 became the first McLaren since the MP4/13 of 1998 to win both championships in the same season.
