Background

The story

The MCL39 was designed under Rob Marshall for the 2025 season and raced by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. It won 14 Grands Prix, seven for each driver, defended McLaren's constructors' title and carried Norris to the drivers' crown, the first for a McLaren driver since Lewis Hamilton in 2008.

The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on 23 March 2025 was the second round and the first sprint weekend of the year. Piastri finished second in the sprint behind Hamilton's Ferrari, then took the first pole position of his Formula One career for the main race.

He converted it into victory ahead of Norris, whose brakes began to fail in the closing laps, and George Russell's Mercedes. It was Piastri's first win of 2025 and lifted him to fourth in the drivers' standings.
