Background

The story

The Toleman TG183, designed by Rory Byrne, was known for its twin rear wings and radiators mounted in the front wing. An updated TG183B raced in 1983 and the first four races of 1984, when a young Ayrton Senna joined the team.

Senna made his Formula One debut in the TG183B at the Brazilian Grand Prix at Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro, on 25 March 1984. He qualified 17th but was the first retirement of the season when his Hart 415T turbo failed on lap eight. He scored his first point at the next race in South Africa.
