Background

The story

The E36 M3 was released in November 1992, at first as a coupé only. It was the first M3 with a six-cylinder engine, the S50 straight-six, which in most markets produced 286 PS from 2,990 cc. North America got a less powerful engine.

Facelifted cars from late 1995 received a 3.2-litre S50 with 236 kW (321 PS). A convertible was added in 1994 and a saloon in December 1994. Production ran from September 1992 to August 1999.

In racing, the E36 M3 GTR won the 1993 German ADAC GT Cup with Johnny Cecotto, and in the US the M3 won IMSA manufacturers' titles for BMW.
