Background

The story

The Mercedes-Benz 124 series, built from 1984 to 1997 and sold as the E-Class from 1993, included saloon, estate, cabriolet and coupé versions. The coupé, chassis code C 124, was presented in early 1987. It had a shorter wheelbase and lower roofline than the saloon, plus pillarless side glazing.

AMG began as an independent firm in Affalterbach that specialised in racing and in tuning Mercedes-Benz models. Its relationship with Mercedes grew closer in the late 1980s, and AMG versions of the 124, such as the E36 AMG coupé, followed.

The C124 coupé was succeeded by the CLK in 1997. The "Stance" in this model's name points to a modern, lowered take on the AMG coupé.
