Background

The story

The Golf V GTI arrived in autumn 2004 with a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine making 200 PS, a 15 mm lower sports suspension, a honeycomb grille and the GTI's typical chequered seat pattern.

For the GTI's 30th anniversary in 2006, Volkswagen launched the Edition 30, with one extra horsepower for each year of the GTI. Boost pressure rose from 1.8 to 1.9 bar, and with modified engine management the output went up to 230 PS (169 kW). Heat-resistant materials were used for the cylinder head, connecting rods, pistons and piston rings. The car also got firmer suspension and Top sports seats with red stitching.

Top speed rose from 235 to 245 km/h. Between 2004 and 2008, 181,000 Golf V GTIs were built.
