Background

The story

BMW M confirmed an estate version of the new M5 on 26 June 2023. Shown in June 2024 and on sale from that November, the M5 Touring is the first M5 estate since the E61, of which only 1,025 were built, and the first M5 Touring ever sold in North America.

Based on the G60 5 Series, it is the first plug-in hybrid M5. The 4.4-litre twin-turbo S68 V8 gives 585 PS and an electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic adds 197 PS, for a combined 727 PS and 1,000 Nm through M xDrive all-wheel drive, which includes a rear-wheel-drive mode.

Production of the new M5 began at BMW's Dingolfing plant in July 2024. Its 18.6 kWh battery gives a claimed electric-only range of 67 km on the WLTP cycle.
