Background

The story

STI models come in two kinds: fully developed versions built to homologate the car for motorsport and sold as road cars, and 'Tuned by STI' cars fitted at the factory with parts from the STI catalogue. Many versions were sold only in Japan, and the WRX STI became a favourite of tuners and amateur racers, especially in rallying.

2003 was a high point for the GD-chassis Impreza in the World Rally Championship. The WRC2003 car, introduced at the Rallye Monte Carlo, took the updated road car's 'blobeye' headlamps, a lighter and stiffer shell and engine changes for more low-rev torque, and Petter Solberg won the drivers' title that year.
