Background

The story

Subaru created Subaru Tecnica International (STi) in 1988 as its motorsport division. After the Impreza's Group A rally debut, an STi version went on sale in January 1994 as a homologation model, and STI versions have topped the Impreza range ever since, at first only in Japan and later in selected world markets.

The second-generation WRX saloon used the GD chassis. Its original 'bugeye' front was replaced by the 'blobeye' in 2004, and the STI went on sale in the United States for the first time for the 2004 model year. In rallying, the Impreza won drivers' titles for Colin McRae in 1995, Richard Burns in 2001 and Petter Solberg in 2003.
