Background

The story

Development of the fourth-generation Supra, the A80, began in February 1989 under teams led by Isao Tsuzuki. It used subframes, suspension and drivetrain parts from the Z30 Soarer. Mass production began in April 1993, and the car was introduced in May that year.

Toyota placed a much greater emphasis on performance this time. The A80 had two new 3.0-litre straight-sixes: the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE, and the twin-turbocharged 2JZ-GTE, rated at 280 PS in Japan.

As sales of sports coupés fell, the Supra left Canada in 1996 and the United States in 1998. Production continued in Japan until August 2002, when tighter emission standards ended it.
